Maria has been the winner of two titles of the Grand Slam singles. She has always been the champion in the U.S open games, defeating some very well known players like Justine Henin, which was in the year 2006 in the U.S Open. She has also defeated Serena Williams about 3 years back, in the final of the Wimbledon.

Maria's parents were initially the residents of Belarus in the city of Homel. They then migrated to Russia in the year 1986 after the nuclear accident of Chernobyl. She was then born in Russia in the year 1987, in the city of Nyagan.

Maria's father was Yuri Sharapov who was quite impressed by his daughter's tennis playing skills, which were evident in her early childhood. Yuri Sharapov then brought Maria to United States, so that she could attend the famous academy of tennis the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, in the state of Florida. At that time Maria was just the age of 7 years only. Maria's mother Yelena too was eager in getting Maria into the tennis profession because of her outstanding talent, but she could not accompany her family to the United States for Maria's admission to the academy because of some of the restrictions in visa of the United States. She then followed them in a few years when Maria was already admitted to the Tennis Academy. Maria has then lived in the United States since she was only seven years of age that makes up altogether of thirteen years of stay in the United States without visiting her country of citizenship, Russia. Sharapova has lived in the United States since then but retains her Russian citizenship.

Maria has been fortunate enough to enjoy immediate success in her passion turned career, it was in the year 2002 that Maria bought a beach home in the beach of Mahattan in California, in the suburbs of Los Angeles. Maria lives in the IMG training facility Bradenton most of the time of the year with her favorite Pomeranian, Dolce who was also featured in one of her many advertisements, which was for the Canon Power Shot.

Sharapova is a friendly and fun loving sort of a girl, she has declared several times about Maria Kirilenko to be her best friend, who is a fellow Russian tennis player. She is also close with the renowned actress Uma Thurman. Amongst the actresses Maria has many times stated that Camilla Belle who acted in When A Stranger Calls, is also her best friend.
