Maria Sharapova Career 2007

Maria finished off the year 2006 with massive success and widespread fame. She was now in the record list with some of the greatest players of Tennis. She concluded the year after winning the Zurich Open in which she defeated defeating Daniela Hantuchova with the statistics of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the final of the tournament.

She then went on winning the Generali Ladies Linz, where she emerged victorious over a fellow Russian champion Nadia Petrova with the statistics of 7-5, 6-2.

This awarded her the fifth title of her career in the year 2006 and an altogether of 15 titles of her career at just the age of 19 years, which is itself a big achievement.

Until her loss in the semifinals of the WTA Tour Championships, Sharapova had won 19 consecutive matches. She finished the year with a 59-9 record and won more Tier I titles than any other player.

The year 2007 also added to her winning books lots of wonderful victories but she also had a few losses on her part. Maria's initial game was the Watson Water Champions Challenge in the beginning of the year 2007 where she reached the finals; it was actually a warm up match for the Australian Open in which she was defeated by Kim Clijsters with the statistics 6-3, 7-6(8).

Maria was one of the favorites in the Australian Open and she defeated Camille Pin in the very first round who was ranked 62 nd in the world, with the statistics 6-3, 4-6, 9-7 on her fourth match point. The interesting thing to note is that the matches were played in the air temperature above 40 degree Celsius, and on court the temperatures hot as high as 50 degree Celsius. Maria was a tigress in the tournament she defeated Vera Zvonareva with the statistics 7-5, 6-4, in the fourth round of the tournament. Again in the Quarterfinals of the tournament she beat Anna Chakvetadze with the statistics 7-6(5), 7-5 and went on to the finals of the Australian Open. In the semi finals she had her most difficult opponent in most of the matches Kim Clijsters who was defeated by Maria with the statistics 6-4, 6-2, which opened her way to the first final ever of her career in the Australian Open. It was a great opportunity for Maria to be the only Russian to win the Grand Slam title but unfortunately she lost the title to her opponent Serena Williams who was ranked No. 81 in the world with the statistics 6-1, 6-2.

Maria then played the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo where she defeated and after Francesca Schiavone in the second round of the tournament and then in quaterfinals she emerged victorious over Ai Sugiyama, but unfortunately she had to retire from her semi final match because of a hamstring injury.

Maria then recovered from her injury and went on for her next tournament which was the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California, where she won the champions title and emerged top seed.

Serena Williams was now her basic competitor and she lost to her again in the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida, it was in the fourth round this time with the statistics of 6-1, 6-1. Maria had defeated some great players in the tournament like Yung-Jan Chan of Taipei and Venus Williams.
