The years 2004 and 2005 were the basic initial, peak times of her career. Maria had already been renowned as a remarkable player, but she gained the worldwide popularity in these years of her life.
Maria reached the fourth round of the U.S Open Wimbledon, as a wild car entry and then she was known as the third youngest female in the Wimbledon women's champion, after the first two, Lottie Dod and Martina Hingis. She also gained the status of the second youngest player to defeat in the open era Ai Sugiyama with the statistics of (5-7, 7-5, 6-1) in a quarterfinal, and then Lindsay Davenport with the statistics (2-6, 7-6, 6-1) in a semifinal, also she went on defending the champion Serena Williams twice in the finals with the statistics of (6-1, 6-4). Maria then got the honor of being the first ever Russian player to win the tournament.
A few months after this huge success, Maria took part in the U.S Open where she lost in opposition with a French player and also Mary Pierce who has been a winner of the Grand Slam champion twice.
Victory was never impossible for Maria, she again pulled it off at the end of the season of 2004 in WTA Championships, and she defeated Serena Williams who was also injured at that point of time with the statistics (4-6, 6-2, 6-4). Maria had earlier defeated Anastasia Myskina in the semi final match of the same event. She seemed to be annoyed by the attitude of her father Yuri Sharapov and said:
"He was just yelling and screaming instructions to her and I thought he just might jump right on the court at one point in the match."
In the U.S Open match in the year 2004, when Maria was playing against Mary Pierce, she along with many other female Russian tennis players wore a black ribbon to observe the tragedy in their nation. The Belsan School hostage crisis had taken place only a few days ago.
Undoubtedly the graph of Maria's professional success shot up very high after the month of June in 2004 until the semifinal of her Wimbledon match in the year 2005. Maria broke all records and won 22 straight matches, during this period of time which also included the highly esteemed titles like the Brimingham and Wimbledon. She then went up to the semi finals of the Australian Open in the year 2005 against Serena Williams which she lost with the statistics 2-6, 7-5, 8-6. She was then later on praised and paid for several endorsements commercially.
Maria had the passion of defending the Wimbledon title in the year 2005, she won till the semi finals of the match without even losing a single set and then she failed to win over Venus Williams with the statistics (7-6, 6-1).
She had a back injury in the finals of Wimbledon because of which she was forced to stay back from defending the ranking points she had obtained in the US hard-court season of 2004. It was during this time that she rose to the Number 1 ranking worldwide, which was in the year 2005 on the 22 nd Day of August. Her position in the No.1 status lasted for only a week. Daven port then came back to the No.1 title after he won the title of New Haven. Maria then rose again to the esteemed title of No.1 on the 12 th of September in the same year. She held this title for about six weeks this time.
