Maria had a scheduled play in the very famous Family Circle Cup in Charleston which is in South Carolina. During this time, she had a major shoulder injury because of which she couldn't play the Fed Cup tie against Spain and also another major game in the Qatar Telecom German Open.
It was then expected that Maria would return with a bang at the Telecom Italia Msters Roma in the grand city of Rome, but she had to call off her visit again as she stated in her official website that although she was recovering, her body was not completely in a situation, fit for playing the match.
Her return was then seen at the Istanbul Cup, which was known to be Maria's first clay court tournament of that particular year. She lost the match to her contender who was a French woman Aravane Rezai, in the semi finals of the match with the statistics of 6-2, 6-4.
For the first time in Maria's career she was able to reach the finals of the French Open. She was an enthusiastic player throughout the series, defeating Patty Schneider in the fourth round and also the Russian player Anna Chakvetadze after she reached the quarterfinals of the match, but it was in the semifinal of the tournament that Maria had to give up the title in front of Ana Ivanovic with the score of 6-2, 6-1.
Maria was honored a place in the DFS Classic Final rounds in Birmingham, the great United Kingdom. But she again had to face a defeat by Jankovic with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. It was a close match and at certain points the ball was completely in the court of Maria, but then she lost eventually due to a forehand error. Although Maria lost, the tournament was a dynamic one for Maria where she beat players like Lilia Osterloh; Tamira Paszek; Elena Likhovtseva and Marion Bartoli in the semifinals.
She has always kept her hands on the Wimbledon matches and this time again Maria defeated Yung-Jan Chan with the score of 6-1, 7-5, which was in the very first round. She continued her victory and also beat Severine Bremond with an exceptional score of 6-0, 6-3 and ended up winning the first eight games of the match. She won over some exceptional players during the course of the tournament like Ai Sugiyama with the score of 6-3, 6-3. She also lost for the very first time in any Grand Slam fourth round to Venus Williams.
Maria participated in her next tournament at California, the Acura Classic in San Diego, she was the defending champion in this series. She carried on with the former doubles partner Tamarine Tanasugarn who was from Thailand with the score of 6-1, 6-3. She won over the number 13 seed Tatiana Golovin from France with the score of 6-0, 6-3.Maria then faced Sania Mirza from India in the quarterfinals and easily won the match. She then went on for a victory over the Russian number 3 seed Anna Chakvetadze in the semifinal round with the score of 6-3, 6-2.
